QUESTION AND ANSWER
Question:
Joseph (Redding, CA) asked: What's this law that changed? 80 years since what?
Answer:
In the aftermath of the stock market crash and during the ensuing Great Depression the SEC passed the Securities Act of 1933. This law regulated the sale of securities (stock) and subsequently limited investing opportunities in private companies to a select few ultra-wealthy investors. The government intended to protect us from fraudsters and from ourselves.

Roll forward 80 years. Investing is safer than ever before. We have tools like the internet, background checks, and online banking to prevent fraud. We also believe everyone - no matter how wealthy - is smart enough to allocate their own money.

In 2012, Congress passed Regulation Crowdfunding which lifts many of the restrictions passed in 1933. It took the SEC four years to write the rules. On May 16th, it finally happened. We now all can invest as little as $100 in the things we care about. For the first time in 80 years, businesses can publicly raise from their neighbors, customers, or local communities instead of just wealthy angels, bankers, or venture capitalists. This is the start of a revival of capitalism when we become a nation of owners.
