George Soros (Trades, Portfolio) and Warren Buffett (Trades, Portfolio) have highly disparate investing
philosophies: Buffett primarily buys U.S. stalwarts and holds for the
long-term, while Soros made a billion dollars shorting the British pound.
Sometimes the viewpoints of the two wildly successful money managers overlap
though, and they end up buying into the same companies.
Buffett and Soros also
maintain dissimilar portfolios. At second quarter-end, Soros’s family office,
Soros Fund Management, held 252 stocks, with 86 new ones purchased in the
quarter for 17% turnover and a total value of $9.6 billion. At the same time,
Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK.A)(NYSE:BRK.B) also held 50
stocks, adding one new holding in the quarter, for turnover of 3% and total
value of $109.5 billion.
Berkshire began
building a Directv stake in third quarter 2011 and has not added new shares
since fourth quarter 2014. Based on his average share purchase price he has an
estimated gain of 66% on the holding at its Wednesday afternoon price of $94.
Soros first purchased the stock in second quarter 2010, sold out in second
quarter 2014, and restarted a position in fourth quarter 2014. He has been
buying more shares of the company in each quarter since. The holding is 2.7% of
Buffett’s and 0.7% of Soros’ portfolios.
Directv was
incorporated in Delaware in 2009. The company is a provider of digital
television entertainment in the U.S. and Latin America. Directv has a market
cap of $47.18 billion; its shares were traded with a P/E ratio of 16.2 and P/S
ratio of 1.42. Directv had an annual average earnings growth of 26.6% over the
past five years.
Berkshire first
purchased GM in first quarter 2012 and has bought or sold the company since
fourth quarter 104. He has an average gain of 18% based on Wednesday’s closing
price of $33, and the holding of 41 million shares represents 1.25% of
Berkshire’s portfolio. Soros began buying it earlier, in first quarter 2010,
and most recently made a 75.5% reduction to the holding. He held 3,502,128
shares at quarter-end, reflecting 0.39% of the portfolio. He has an average
gain of 5% on the holding.
General Motors Co. was
incorporated as a Delaware corporation in 2009. General Motors Co. has a market
cap of $52.29 billion; its shares were traded with a P/E ratio of 12.27 and P/S
ratio of 0.36. The dividend yield of General Motors Co. stock is 4.0%.
Berkshire held 1,563,434
shares of Verisk Analytics, a position began in second quarter 2011 and not
traded since third quarter 2012. It encompasses only 0.1% of the portfolio and
has delivered a 75% average gain at a closing price of $81.22. Soros invested
in the company beginning in first quarter 2010 and has not traded its shares
since third quarter 2014. His average gain was about 34%.
Verisk Analytics Inc.
was incorporated in Delaware in 1971. Verisk Analytics Inc. has a market cap of
$13.68 billion; its shares were traded with a P/E ratio of 29.6 and P/S ratio
of 7.21. Verisk Analytics Inc. had an annual average earnings growth of 17.9%
over the past five years.
Berkshire held 1,351,731
shares of Mondelez International, a position they had not changed since fourth
quarter 2014 and which represents 0.6% of the portfolio. Berkshire had an
average gain of 41% at a closing price of $44.33 per share. Soros holds 23,779
shares of Mondelez International, a 0.02% portfolio weight. He has not changed
the position since second quarter 2011 and has an average 14% gain on the
holding.

Inc. was formerly known as Kraft Foods Inc. Mondelez International Inc. has a
market cap of $71.24 billion; its shares were traded with a P/E ratio of 34.9
and P/S ratio of 2.27. The dividend yield of Mondelez International Inc. stocks
is 1.4%.
